Election 2008

The presidential election that occurred just about two weeks ago was the most historical election so far in U.S. history. The numbers were close, but finally Barack Obama was the one giving his call to action speech at the end of the long election period. Obama's opponent John McCain congratulated him on his victory during his concession speech and also said how the African American race held a special pride the night that Barack became president of the U.S.

Along with John McCain's comment about the special pride of the African American race, the 2008 election has truly intensified and defined The Civil Rights Movement. The dreams of Martin Luther King and other civil rights activists have come true and finally. It is amazing that not too long ago African Americans had to pay a poll tax to vote and public facilities were segregated. The 2008 election has made history for every citizen of the United States.
The election was so charged by both parties, both candidates were well prepared to steer the United States into the right direction and out of this economic ruble the country is currently in.

During this historical election I believe that the vote that counted the most was the youth vote. The technological age we live in today has a great impact on the youth vote. The candidates have advertised and promoted their campaign on websites that are youth driven, therefore more young adults are inspired to learn about the election using something they are very familiar with- the world wide web.

The African American community certainly holds a pride for Obama's victory. When Obama was elected, Jay-Z announced that, "Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther King could walk. Martin Luther King walked so Obama could run." This is an imporatnt landmark in the Civil Rights Movement and I'm sure will trigger major changes in the future as well.

The youth vote and the civil rights movement have a lot of relation. From the times of the civil rights movement to now, a HUGE generation gap was created. If you think about it, there are still those old racist grandfathers out there who are outraged by Obama's win. However, the great impact of the youth vote shows how the generation gap is closing because new young advocates are growing up. They are promoting change just as much as Obama is. Some say that America is not ready for change; but, we are more than ready. And, we thank the lessons of the past for they have created this urge for change within the young generation. It might be easy for the young; however, it is pretty hard to change the minds of a person who acctually lived during that era. However, I believe many of those old farts will change their minds as time goes by and Obama proves to be a pretty decent president.
